The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore (UAS-B), is organising a three-day Urban Krishi 

Mela to encourage people in cities to grow horticultural crops in their houses, using techniques such as rooftop gardening.

 Background of roof harvesting           

         In order to combat with the rising vegetable prices, Tamil Nadu Government has come up with an innovative plan. It has planned to distribute free “do-it-yourself” kits of roof garden to all residents so that they can pluck fresh vegetables from their own gardens. This plan is initially to be introduced in Chennai and Coimbatore cities.
         The horticulture department of Tamil Nadu will distribute the roof top garden kit that contains 20 UV sterilized polyethylene bags of 200 micron thickness, coir pith and manure for 15kg, seeds for vegetables and greens along with organic fertilizer, instruments, and a 20sqm polyethylene sheet
